ANNOUNCEMENT OF EUROPEAN COMPOSITION CONTEST 2004

awarding scholarships for students
at Italian and European conservatoires and St. Cecilia Academy in Rome
BARZIO (LC) 30TH APRIL and 1ST MAY 2004

 SCHOLARSHIPS 2004 

  1. ASSAMI, non-profit Association of Friends of the Conservatoire Giuseppe Verdi of Milan, Corso di Porta Vittoria, 32 – 20122 MILANO (ph. 02/55191412 – fax 02/55185165 – e mail: breccpao@virgilio.it - site: www.assami.it) with resolution of 1st July 2002, is announcing a composition contest awarding scholarships for students at Italian and European Conservatoires and at St. Cecilia Academy in Rome.
  2. Only students of composition enrolled in Italian and European conservatoires and in St. Cecilia Academy in Rome for the school year 2003-2004 can apply.
  3. The detached departments of the above-mentioned bodies can apply separately.
  4. Trainees are not allowed to apply. There is no age limit for the applicants.

ADMISSION APPLICATION 

  1. The candidates must submit their admission application to the Secretary’s office of their Schools. The application must be written on plain paper, duly signed by the applicant and addressed to ASSAMI

    The candidates must also provide their personal data and address to

    which all communications concerning the contest can be forwarded.

  1. Attached to the application, the candidates must send a self-declaration on plain paper, certifying their actual enrollment to the above-mentioned bodies and their course of studies.
  2. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
  3. Applications should reach the Secretary’s office at the applicant’s Institute within 15th February 2004.
  4. With the Admission Application, the candidate accepts all rules of this regulation.

The enrollment fee is 10,00 euros. 

PRELIMINARY TEST 

  1. This test consists in presenting a composition for voice and organ or for voice and instruments up to a maximum of five instruments, on a text by Alessandro Manzoni, chosen by the candidate. The composition will last from five to ten minutes.
  2.  Within 28th February 2004 the candidates must hand in their scores to the Secretary’s office of their Institutes.
  3.  Within 10th March 2004 a Board of Examiners, operating in each Institute, will screen all scores submitted by students of its own Institute and it will appoint the author of the selected score, whose execution will have to be performed by musicians chosen by the composer himself. 
  4.  Within 20th March 2004, final deadline, each Institute will communicate ASSAMI, Corso di Porta Vittoria, 32 – 20122 MILANO (ph. 02/55191412 – fax 02/55185165 – e mail: breccpao@virgilio.it - site: www.assami.it) the names of the composer and of the musicians, who will take part in the final performance in Barzio (Lecco) and will concomitantly send the score to ASSAMI, together with the chosen literary text by Manzoni and the length of the composition.

 

The deadline of 20th March is peremptory, while the other deadlines are regulative.  

 

BOARD OF EXAMINERS 

 14. The Board of Examiners, appointed by ASSAMI, will be composed of

      famous musicians and music critics, together with the Chairman of

      ASSAMI or his representative.  Chairman of the Board is M° Giacomo Manzoni.

      15. The decisions taken by the Board of Examiners are final and inappellable. The Board of Examiners will meet within
            1st April 2004 to select the   4 finalists.

      16. The Board may exercise the faculty not to award any prize       should there be no eligible compositions.

AWARDS 

There are 4 awards consisting in a total amount of  3.700,00 euros and they will be awarded as following:

1st prize:  1.500,00 euros

2nd prize: 1.000,00 euros

3rd prize:     700,00 euros

4th prize:     500,00 euros

All awards include the travel expenses, as well as the accommodation costs for the composers and their instrumental groups.

 

FINAL TEST

17. The final selection will take place in Barzio, in the Basilica of St.

      Alessandro, on 30th April 2004, at 3 o’clock p.m., where the

      singers and the musicians chosen by each composer will perform
      the compositions selected by the Board of Examiners.

     18. The performance of the compositions will follow the alphabetical
           order of the composers’ names. 

CANDIDATES’ COMMITMENT 

19. The submitted scores will not be returned and they will be part of the

      archive of ASSAMI or of any body chosen by ASSAMI itself.

20. The participants and their ensemble cannot ask for any  compensation for possible recordings and/or radio-television   
      broadcastings and/or makings of records (or of any other medium) of the contest.

 

MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS 

21. The musical instruments cannot be provided by the organization.

      An organ Mascioni is available at the Basilica of St. Alessandro in

      Barzio, with the following specifications:

      mechanical transmission, 3 keyboards, 40 organ stops, according to

      the enclosed description.

ORGANIZATION

 

22. The prize-awarding ceremony will immediately follow the

      execution of the winning compositions.

23. On 1st May, in the morning, the Chairman of the Board of

      Examiners, M° Giacomo Manzoni, (together with the other

      members) will meet the composers to start a critical discussion on

      the finalist compositions, after their performances. 

      The scholarship grants are subject to the actual attendance of the

      winners and the performers at the prize-awarding ceremony and at

      the discussion meeting which will take place in Barzio.

24. The Contest Management has the right to offer the winning

      composition or the 4 final compositions, a choreographic

      execution by worldwide renowned choreographers, during next year

      composition festival.

 
HOSPITALITY

 

25. The selected composers and their performers may benefit from

      agreed hospitality conditions.

      All necessary information will be given by ASSAMI on request.

26. Any controversy concerning this notice should rise, the place of sole jurisdiction is the Court of Milan.

27.The candidates accept all conditions hereby stated, in particular as stated in the Italian version of this notice, at the act of signing the application.

 The Contest Management has the right to introduce changes to this announcement for organizational reasons.
